Flipbooks AI vs Xodo: Which One Does Your PDF Actually Need Next?

Xodo is a PDF reader and editor from Apryse that runs almost everywhere: a browser, a Windows, Mac or Linux desktop, iPhone and Android, and inside Google Workspace. It edits, annotates, redacts, converts, merges, compares, runs OCR and signs. What it does not do is publish a document as a page turning flipbook that a reader opens from a link, and that is the one thing Flipbooks AI does. Very often the file Xodo produces is the file we publish, so this is a comparison between two halves of the same job rather than two answers to the same question. It covers what Xodo's free tier really allows, the prices on both pricing pages, where branding appears, how privacy differs when one tool hosts a page and the other keeps a file, and which half belongs to which tool. Everything specific was read from each vendor's own pages in August 2026.

The Short Answer

Choose Flipbooks AI if the PDF is done and the next thing that has to happen is somebody reading it. You upload the file, pick a page turn effect, and share one link that opens in any browser with no account, no app and no download. The free plan keeps three flipbooks live with no daily limit and no clock, and the paid ladder buys the reading experience: your own logo and brand colours from $59 a year, an embed with an allowed domain list from $108 a year, and background music or a separate password for each reader at the top.

Choose Xodo if the work is still inside the file. It edits, annotates, redacts, converts to Word, Excel and PowerPoint, merges, splits, rotates, compares documents, runs OCR, fills forms and signs through Xodo Sign, across a browser, a Windows, Mac or Linux desktop, iOS, Android and Google Workspace. It is backed by Apryse's PDF technology, it sells a genuine offline desktop application with perpetual licensing as an option, and it has mobile apps. Flipbooks AI has none of those things at any price.

Flipbooks AI wins 8 of these 11 rows, ties 3 and loses none. They are rows we picked, so read them that way. The sections below say plainly where Xodo is the better buy.

Pricing Compared

Both companies publish their prices, which is more than can be said for a lot of this category, so start with the numbers as each page prints them. Flipbooks AI sells three plans in US dollars, the same wherever in the world you check from, checked in August 2026: Starter at $59 a year, annual only, Plus at $14 a month or $108 a year, and Ultra at $29 a month or $228 a year. No seats to count, no add-ons and nothing above Ultra to be upsold into.

Xodo's plan table, read in August 2026, lists three individual products. Xodo Web is $7.99 a month billed yearly and covers access to over 40 online tools with unlimited document downloads in any browser. Xodo PDF Studio Desktop is $9.99 a month billed yearly, covers over 60 professional tools, works offline, and is also available under a perpetual licence rather than a subscription. Xodo Document Suite, the one marked as popular, is $14.99 a month billed yearly and bundles the web tools, the desktop application and the iOS and Android apps together. Custom team plans start at $80.94 a month for six users, shown on the page with a 46 per cent discount applied.

Two things about that table are worth knowing before you compare it with ours. The first is that every figure is a monthly number under yearly billing, and no separate monthly billed rate is printed beside it, so a month by month price is not something you can read off the page. The page says yearly billing saves up to 50 per cent, which implies a standard rate exists, but it does not print one. The second is the perpetual licence on PDF Studio Desktop, which is a genuinely different proposition from anything we sell: software you own outright rather than rent. If you dislike subscriptions, that option alone may decide this. Our three prices are all subscriptions, and the cheapest one is annual only.

What Each Free Plan Really Gives You

Xodo's free tier is best understood as a sampler rather than a plan you settle into, and their own FAQ is refreshingly direct about it. Free users get one free action per day, no access to the premium online tools, and Xodo Drive capacity reduced to 1 GB. One action a day is enough to merge a file in a hurry or convert something once, which is a real service and costs nothing, but it is not a tier you would run a workflow on. There is also a 3 day free trial of the paid features, and it requires a valid payment method to start, cancellable at any time during those three days.

That model is perfectly legitimate for a tool whose value is doing many small operations on many files, and it is not a criticism to describe it accurately. It does mean the two free offers are hard to line up. Ours is not metered by actions at all, because there is only really one action: publish a document and leave it published.

The Flipbooks AI free plan keeps three flipbooks live at a time on 1 GB of storage, which is the same free storage figure Xodo gives. There is no page cap, so a 300 page catalogue goes up whole, no advertising beside the reader, and readers never need an account. A single shared password is allowed while you are still free, and the flipbook is never listed in any public directory. The three flipbook allowance is a rolling one rather than a lifetime total, so deleting a flipbook frees the slot straight away. No card is needed to start and there is no trial clock. The limits worth seeing up front are that free flipbooks use the magazine page turn effect only and carry a small Flipbooks AI mark in the corner of the viewer.

Branding and Watermarks

Xodo comes out of this section better than we do on the free plan, and it should be said first. A PDF edited, merged or converted in Xodo is your file with your pages in it. Nothing in their published feature list suggests a Xodo badge is stamped across the output, because Xodo is not publishing anything: it works on the file and hands it back. A free Flipbooks AI flipbook carries a small Flipbooks AI mark in the corner of the viewer until you pay. At $0, on the narrow question of whose name appears beside your pages, they are cleaner.

The reason that is not the end of it is that the marks are in different places and answer to different audiences. Xodo's absence of a mark is on a file that still has to reach somebody. Ours is on a hosted reader that strangers open from a link, on a phone, without downloading anything. Removing our corner mark costs $59 a year on Starter, the cheapest paid plan, and the same step lets you put your own logo there instead and unlocks brand colours for the reader controls, so the buttons and chrome around your pages match your palette rather than sitting in our defaults.

There is no equivalent ladder on the Xodo side, and there would be no reason for one. A document editor has nothing to brand, because the thing your audience sees is the PDF itself and the PDF is entirely yours. That is a fair trade rather than a gap: if branding for you means the pages, Xodo never touches them, and if branding for you means the frame the pages are read in, that frame only exists on our side. Prices checked in August 2026.

Privacy and Who Can Find Your Flipbook

The structural difference is the whole answer here. Xodo's desktop application, PDF Studio Desktop, works offline, which means a document you edit there never has to leave your machine at all. Nothing is published, nothing gets a public address, and there is no link for anyone to find. Xodo also describes itself as a secure document management and e-signature product and leans on Apryse's PDF technology behind it. For a confidential document, keeping it a file on a machine you control is a stronger position than any hosted reader can offer, and we would not argue otherwise.

A Flipbooks AI flipbook, by design, is reachable by its link. It is not listed in any directory, there is no public profile page, and we never submit it to a search engine, including on the free plan, so nobody stumbles across it. But sharing it means giving a URL to people, and a URL is a public address. A single shared password works on the free plan and per reader passwords come with Ultra at $29 a month or $228 a year.

The blunt version, about our product rather than theirs, is this: on Flipbooks AI a password gates the reader interface, not the file behind it. If a document genuinely must not leak, a flipbook is the wrong container for it and no plan of ours fixes that. Something that stays a file, edited offline in a desktop application, is the right answer, and Xodo sells one. We did not test Xodo's own cloud storage, Xodo Drive, at that level, so treat their hosted side as unchecked rather than assuming it matches or beats anything here.

Embedding and Sharing

Sharing from Xodo means sharing a document. You edit or convert it, then send it by email, put it in a shared drive, or push it out through Xodo Sign for signature, and the recipient opens it in whatever PDF reader they have. Because the apps run on a browser, on Windows, Mac and Linux, on iOS and Android and inside Google Workspace, the file follows the person rather than the device, which is genuinely useful when the same document has to be read on a train and marked up at a desk. None of that involves an embed, because there is no hosted page to frame.

On Flipbooks AI the embed code and the allowed domain list arrive together on Plus, at $14 a month or $108 a year. The embed places the page turning reader inside your own site, so the document sits in your page instead of at the end of a download link. The domain list is the part that matters: you name the sites permitted to frame the flipbook, so the code cannot simply be lifted out of your page source and used somewhere you never approved. On the free plan and on Starter, sharing is by link only, and that link works in any browser with no account.

Which model wins depends on who is at the other end. A document going to one person, or to a colleague who has to annotate it and send it back, wants to be a file, and Xodo's spread across every platform makes that easy. A document going to an audience you cannot name, a catalogue, a brochure, a prospectus, a report, wants to be a page, because most of that audience will never download a 40 MB PDF to look at page one. Neither tool is trying to do the other's version of sharing.

Ease of Use and What Each Tool Is For

Xodo is the broader product by a distance, and the breadth is the point of it. It carries over 30 tools by its own count, with more than 40 online and more than 60 in the desktop application: editing, annotation, redaction, conversion to and from Word, Excel and PowerPoint, merging, splitting, rotating and rearranging pages, form filling, document comparison, OCR and e-signature through Xodo Sign. It runs in a browser, on Windows, Mac and Linux, on iPhone and Android, and inside Google Workspace, and it is backed by Apryse, whose PDF technology sits underneath a great many other products. On Capterra it holds 4.4 out of 5 from 59 reviews.

Flipbooks AI is narrow on purpose and it is easier to describe by what it is missing. There is no page editor, no conversion, no OCR, no redaction, no document comparison, no e-signature, no desktop application, no mobile app, no team seats and no API. The design work and the editing happened wherever the PDF was made, and we have no intention of growing into that half of the job.

What is left is one question answered properly: the PDF exists, how does it get read. You upload the file, choose a page turn effect, add a password if the document is private, set your logo and brand colours if you are paying, and share the link. Readers open it on a phone or a laptop with no account and nothing installed, and the flipbook stays live until you delete it, with no inactivity rule and no expiry. So pick by the job in front of you rather than by the vendor. Anything that still needs work on the file points at Xodo. Anything that is finished and needs an audience points here, and plenty of documents pass through both in that order.

Who Should Choose Which

Choose Flipbooks AI if

  • The PDF is finished and what you need is a link readers open in a browser with no account
  • You want a free tier with no daily action limit, where a published document stays live until you delete it
  • You want your own logo and brand colours on the reader for $59 a year
  • You want an embed you can restrict to your own domains, from $108 a year

Choose Xodo if

  • The work is still inside the file: editing, annotating, redacting, converting, merging or OCR
  • You want the same document tools on a browser, a Windows, Mac or Linux desktop, iOS, Android and Google Workspace
  • You want an offline desktop application, optionally on a perpetual licence rather than a subscription
  • You need e-signature, form filling or document comparison, none of which Flipbooks AI offers at any price

How to Switch from Xodo to Flipbooks AI

This is less a switch than the step that comes after Xodo, because the two products handle different halves of the same document and nothing below asks you to cancel anything. There is no import path either, since a flipbook is always generated from a source document. If the finished PDF already exists, publishing it takes about as long as one upload.

  1. Finish the file in Xodo first. Do the editing, the conversion, the merging, the redaction and the OCR where those tools live, then export the final PDF from Xodo rather than from a viewer or a screenshot. Use the best quality export available, because that one file becomes every page of the flipbook, and text exported properly stays sharp and selectable instead of being flattened into pictures of words.
  2. Work out which documents are meant to be read by an audience. Anything heading to one named person, or to a colleague who will annotate it and send it back, should stay a file and stay in Xodo. The ones worth publishing are catalogues, brochures, prospectuses, reports, lookbooks, manuals and menus, the documents where you cannot list the readers in advance. Making that list once stops you publishing things that should never have left the file.
  3. Upload the PDF to Flipbooks AI. Drop the file on the create page. There is no page cap, so a long catalogue or annual report goes up whole, and the free plan gives 1 GB of storage with three flipbooks live at a time, the same free storage figure Xodo offers. You see a preview of the finished flipbook before anything is shared, and readers need no account to open it.
  4. Set the effect, password and branding, then share the link. Pick a page turn effect and add a shared password if the document is private, which works on the free plan here. Free flipbooks use the magazine effect and carry a small corner mark; any paid plan from $59 a year removes it or puts your own logo there and unlocks brand colours, and Ultra at $29 a month or $228 a year adds background music and a separate password for each reader. Prices checked in August 2026.
  5. Repoint the links and keep the file work where it is. Update the QR codes, email signatures, social posts and website buttons that used to point at a downloadable PDF, and if you are on Plus, list your own sites as the allowed domains so nobody else can frame the flipbook. Keep your Xodo subscription for the editing and signing, because when the document changes you will export a fresh PDF and upload it again.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Xodo free, and what does the free tier include?

There is a free tier, and their own FAQ describes it plainly: one free action per day, no access to the premium online tools, and Xodo Drive capacity reduced to 1 GB, checked in August 2026. There is also a 3 day free trial of the paid features, which requires a valid payment method to begin and can be cancelled at any point during those three days. One action a day is a genuine service for an occasional merge or conversion, but it is a sampler rather than a plan to work in. Our free plan is not metered by actions and needs no card.

How much does Xodo cost?

From their plan table in August 2026: Xodo Web is $7.99 a month billed yearly with access to over 40 online tools, Xodo PDF Studio Desktop is $9.99 a month billed yearly with over 60 tools and offline use, and Xodo Document Suite is $14.99 a month billed yearly and bundles the web tools, the desktop application and the iOS and Android apps. Custom team plans start at $80.94 a month for six users. Every figure is a monthly rate under yearly billing, and no separate monthly billed price is printed beside it. PDF Studio Desktop is also sold under a perpetual licence.

Can Xodo make a flipbook with page turns?

No. Xodo is a PDF reader, editor and document workflow product, and nothing in its published feature list describes a page turning reader or a hosted link that an audience opens in a browser. That is a category difference rather than a shortcoming, because Xodo's job is to get the file right and then get it to somebody. Flipbooks AI starts where that finishes: the same PDF becomes a flipbook with real page turns, opened from one link, on a phone or a laptop, with no download and no account.

Does Xodo watermark the PDFs it produces?

Nothing in their published feature list suggests it does, and it would be surprising if a document editor of this kind marked your pages. A file edited, merged or converted in Xodo is your file with your pages in it. That is cleaner at no cost than a free flipbook of ours, which carries a small Flipbooks AI mark in the corner of the viewer until you pay. Any paid plan from $59 a year removes that mark or swaps in your own logo and unlocks brand colours for the reader controls, checked in August 2026.

Is Xodo the same company as Apryse?

Xodo presents itself as Xodo by Apryse and says it is backed by Apryse's twenty years of PDF technology and expertise, with the site marked as powered by Apryse. In practical terms that means the document engine underneath it is the same technology a lot of other software licenses, which is a real point in its favour for anything demanding on file handling. It has no bearing on this comparison beyond that, since neither Xodo nor Apryse publishes documents as page turning flipbooks.

Can I password protect a Flipbooks AI flipbook?

Yes, with one honest caveat. A single shared password is allowed on the free plan, and Ultra at $29 a month or $228 a year gives each reader a separate password of their own. The caveat is that our password gates the reader interface rather than the file behind it, so it is not a substitute for a system with real access control. If a document must not leak under any circumstances, keep it a file and edit it offline in something like Xodo's desktop application rather than publishing it as a flipbook.

Is there a page limit or a file size limit on Flipbooks AI?

There is no page cap at all, so a 300 page catalogue or annual report goes up whole. The free plan comes with 1 GB of storage and keeps three flipbooks live at a time, and in practice it is the storage quota rather than the page count that stops you. A very heavy PDF simply takes longer to convert. Deleting a flipbook frees its slot and its storage immediately, so the three flipbook allowance is a rolling one and a free account can publish many more than three documents across a year.

Can I import my Xodo documents into Flipbooks AI?

There is no import path, because a flipbook is always generated from a source document. That makes the move simpler rather than harder: export the finished PDF from Xodo and upload that file, which takes about a minute. What does not travel is anything held in the Xodo account rather than in the file, such as annotations that were never flattened, signature records, form data and anything sitting in Xodo Drive. Export or flatten whatever you need to keep before you rely on the flipbook.

Can I use Xodo and Flipbooks AI together?

That is the sensible arrangement and it is what most people with both would end up doing. Edit, convert, merge, redact and sign in Xodo, on whichever of its platforms suits where you are, then when a document is finished and meant to be read by an audience, upload that same PDF here and share the flipbook link. One tool owns the file and everything that happens to it, the other owns the moment it is published. Free accounts on our side are enough to test the whole path before anyone pays.

Is Xodo a good tool?

Yes, and it is one of the more complete products in its category. It holds 4.4 out of 5 from 59 reviews on Capterra, it spans a browser, Windows, Mac, Linux, iOS, Android and Google Workspace, it carries over 60 tools in the desktop application, it sells that desktop version on a perpetual licence for people who would rather own software than rent it, and it is backed by Apryse's PDF technology. Flipbooks AI has no editor, no conversion, no OCR, no e-signature and no desktop or mobile app. The honest split is that Xodo owns the file wherever you happen to be, and we own the page a reader opens.
