Flipbooks AI vs Issuu: Which Flipbook Maker Should You Use?
Both tools turn a document into a flipbook you can share with a link, and both have a free plan. They are built for different jobs. Issuu is a publishing platform with an audience attached, and Flipbooks AI publishes a PDF you have already designed. The free plans differ far more than the paid ones, and the two most expensive words in this comparison are ads and branding. This page covers what each free tier actually allows, where Issuu's branding text and in-publication ads appear, what removing them costs, how privacy and embedding work on each side, and the things Issuu genuinely does better. Every Issuu feature and limit here comes from Issuu's own help documentation, read in August 2026. The only figures that do not are the prices and the review score, which come from Capterra's United States listing and are labelled as such.
Choose Flipbooks AI if your document is a finished PDF, is longer than ten pages, and you want it online today with a password on it, no ads beside it and no public listing, without buying Issuu's Unlimited tier just to put your own logo on it instead of ours.
Choose Issuu if you want the audience its public publications get inside its own on-site search and community, if your source file is a Word, PowerPoint, ePUB or Google Docs file rather than a PDF, if you want to sell publications or collect leads inside the reader, or if you need team roles, single sign-on and an API. Those are real capabilities Flipbooks AI does not have.

Flipbooks AI wins 8 of these 11 rows, ties 3 and loses none. They are rows we picked, so read them that way. Every figure was checked against Issuu's own public pages in August 2026, and the sections below say plainly where Issuu is the better buy.
Pricing Compared
Issuu does not publish its prices in its help documentation. Its own articles say prices may vary and send you to the pricing page, and that page builds its numbers in the browser, so there is nothing quotable to read there either. The figures that circulate come from third parties. Capterra's United States listing, checked in August 2026, shows Starter at $19.00 a month and Unlimited at $188.00 a month as flat rates, with Teams sold on a custom quote. Treat those as Capterra's numbers rather than Issuu's, because the billing period behind them is not confirmed.
Flipbooks AI prices sit on the page, and they were checked in August 2026 as well. Starter is $59 a year and is sold annually only. Plus is $14 a month or $108 a year. Ultra is $29 a month or $228 a year. The steps buy capability rather than volume. Every paid tier removes our corner mark and unlocks brand colours, Plus adds the embed code and the allowed domain list along with more page turn effects, and Ultra adds background music and per reader passwords.
The question worth asking either vendor is what the cheapest clean flipbook costs. On Issuu, advanced control over your brand, including the ability to remove Issuu branding, is listed under Unlimited, its third tier, and removing in-publication ads also means going past Starter, so a clean, unbranded, ad-free publication starts at Unlimited rather than at Issuu's entry paid plan. On Flipbooks AI that is Starter at $59 a year. One thing Issuu publishes that we do not match: 50% off all plans for verified non-profit organisations, and a free year of the Starter plan for individual students, renewing at full price after the first year.
What Each Free Plan Really Gives You
Issuu tightened its free plan rather than loosening it. Since 29 May 2025 the Basic plan allows a maximum of five published documents in total, not per month, and each document is capped at 50 MB and ten pages. Documents that exceed those limits stay hosted on Issuu but become inaccessible to readers, although the publisher can still download them. Free Basic also has no embedding at all, and its analytics are basic statistics covering 30-day content performance.
The ten-page ceiling is the number to look at first, because it rules out essentially any real magazine, catalogue or brochure. Our free plan is three flipbooks live at a time with 1 GB of storage, the magazine page turn effect only, and a small Flipbooks AI mark in the corner. On raw document count, five beats three and we will not pretend otherwise. On what you can actually publish, there is no page cap here, a single shared password is allowed on the free plan, and no ads ever appear beside the reader.
Issuu is also far more forgiving about what you feed it. It ingests PDF, Word, PowerPoint, OpenOffice, WordPerfect, RTF, StarOffice, Google Docs and Slides, ePUB and MOBI. Flipbooks AI is PDF-first, so if your source is a .docx or a .pptx and you would rather not export a PDF first, Issuu genuinely saves you a step. On our side, deleting a flipbook frees a slot straight away, which makes three at a time easier to live with than the number suggests.
Branding, Ads and What They Cost to Remove
Wording matters here, so take Issuu's own. What its documentation describes is branding text rather than a mark stamped across your pages: the embed reader carries "Flipbook created with Issuu" below it, and embedded content carries "Powered by Issuu". Separately, publishers on the Basic and Starter plans see in-publication advertisements when their content is viewed in full-screen mode. Issuu describes those as pop-ups or ads beside the flipbook, a mix of its own promotional ads and third-party ads, and adds that publications on those plans will be displayed within a webpage that may include third-party ads.
Getting rid of either one means buying Unlimited, Issuu's third tier. Advanced control over your brand, including the ability to remove Issuu branding, is listed under Unlimited, and the option to remove external ads sits there as well. Starter does not do it. On Starter you must retain "Powered by Issuu" on embedded content, cannot add logos to full-screen flipbooks, cannot hide the Share button on embeds, and cannot customise background colours or images. Teams, the tier above Unlimited, adds a further option to remove the Issuu logo.
Our free plan is not clean either, and a comparison that claimed otherwise about its own product would not be worth reading. Free flipbooks carry a small Flipbooks AI mark in the corner. The difference is what removing it costs and what comes with it. Every paid tier, starting with Starter at $59 a year, either takes that mark off or replaces it with your own logo, and unlocks brand colours for the reader controls at the same time. There are no ads beside the reader on any Flipbooks AI plan, the free one included.
Privacy and Who Can Find Your Flipbook
Issuu publishes publicly by default. Its privacy control is called Unlisted, and its docs define it as content excluded from the issuu.com search engine and community, accessible only to those with the document URL. Read that definition the other way round and it tells you what default publishing does: public publications are included in Issuu's own on-site search and community. That is a distribution feature if you want an audience and a problem if you do not. Unlisted allowances are plan-bound, with Starter listed at up to five unlisted flipbooks and Unlimited at unlimited.
Issuu is candid that unlisted is obscurity rather than access control. It warns that if the URL is shared publicly, another search engine might discover and index it, effectively making it public. There is no password to fall back on either: Issuu states that currently it does not offer password protection for the Unlisted document URLs. Its wording about how many unlisted slots the free Basic plan gets is ambiguous, so check that inside your own account rather than assuming, before you publish anything sensitive on it.
A Flipbooks AI flipbook is reachable by its link and by nothing else. It is never listed in a public directory, the collection cannot be browsed by anyone but its owner, and we never submit it to search engines. A single shared password can be set while you are still on the free plan, and per reader passwords, where each person gets their own, are an Ultra feature. Be clear about the limit on our side though: a Flipbooks AI password gates the reader interface, not the underlying file, so it is not a substitute for a properly access-controlled document store.
Embedding and Sharing
Embedding starts at Starter on Issuu. Website and blog embedding is listed as a Starter feature, the free Basic feature list has no embedding entry, and Issuu tells free users that to continue using the embed feature they will need to upgrade the account. Advanced embed options belong to Unlimited and Teams: hiding the Share button, adding a logo, custom background colours and images, and removing the "Flipbook created with Issuu" and "Powered by Issuu" text. Two documented caveats: drafts cannot be embedded until they are published, and on free WordPress only URL-based embedding works, because the iframe embed code needs a paid WordPress subscription.
On Flipbooks AI, the embed code and the allowed domain list start on Plus at $14 a month or $108 a year. Measured against each ladder that is a concession worth making plainly: Issuu's embed arrives on its entry paid plan and ours arrives on the middle one. What Plus adds in return is the allowed domain list, which decides which sites are permitted to frame the flipbook, and an embed that already carries your logo instead of ours rather than waiting for Unlimited to allow it.
Neither product lets you take the reader away and run it yourself. Issuu states that it does not offer to license, host or download its software on any servers other than its own, and a Flipbooks AI embed keeps the file on our servers too. Plain link sharing is comparable and generous on both sides, since each gives you a URL that opens in a browser with no reader account, although Issuu does ask readers to have an account to redeem a free access code or open content bought through Digital Sales. Issuu's surrounding ecosystem is the bigger one, with documented integrations for Adobe Express, Canva, Hootsuite and WordPress plus a public API. Flipbooks AI has no API at all.
Ease of Use and What Each Tool Is For
These are two different products sharing a category name. Issuu is a publishing platform with an audience attached, and its own definition of Unlisted, excluded from the issuu.com search engine and community, tells you that default publishing gets surfaced there. Its Unlimited tier adds real commerce rather than bolted-on extras: Digital Sales for selling flipbooks, Free Access Codes with single-use or unlimited redemption and expiry dates, and Lead Generation forms. Teams, the tier above it, adds role-based permissions, multiple workspaces and single sign-on. Independent users rate it 4.5 out of 5 across 153 Capterra reviews, with Ease of Use its strongest sub-score at 4.6.
The same listing's two lowest sub-scores are Value for Money and Customer Service, both at 4.0, and there are two other things to weigh before committing. The product surface has been contracting: the mobile app was sunset, Groups accounts were phased out in April 2025 and the Articles feature was discontinued. The entry paid tier is also hard to plan around, because Issuu confirms that Starter has per-document page and file size limits but keeps the numbers out of its documentation and points you at the pricing page instead. That gap is specific to Starter, since Unlimited and Teams are documented as unlimited publications with no restrictions on page count or file size.
Flipbooks AI answers a much narrower question. Your PDF is finished, so how do you get it online and readable. You upload the file, pick a page turn effect, set a password if it is private, and share the link. There is no template gallery, no in-tool page editor, no custom domain, no team seats and no API, because the design work already happened wherever you made the PDF. If you need any of those, or if you are choosing a flipbook host partly for the audience it brings with it, Issuu is the better buy and we would rather say so.
Who Should Choose Which
Choose Flipbooks AI if
Your PDF is finished, longer than ten pages, and you want it online today
You want the tool's branding gone for $59 a year instead of at Issuu's Unlimited tier
You need a password on a share link, which Issuu says it does not offer for Unlisted URLs
You do not want ads shown beside your document on any plan, the free one included
Choose Issuu if
You want an audience you do not already have, since Issuu's public publications are surfaced in its own on-site search and community
Your source is not a PDF: Issuu ingests Word, PowerPoint, OpenOffice, RTF, Google Docs and Slides, ePUB and MOBI
You want to sell publications, hand out free access codes with expiry dates, or collect leads inside the reader
You need role-based permissions, multiple workspaces, single sign-on, an API, or integrations with Canva, Adobe Express, Hootsuite and WordPress
How to Switch from Issuu to Flipbooks AI
There is no import step, because a flipbook is always built from a source document. If you still have the PDF you uploaded, the move takes about as long as one upload.
Download your source files from Issuu first. Do this before you cancel or downgrade anything. Issuu's downgrade rules are strict: on Basic only the five most recently published documents stay accessible to your audience, publications that exceed the new plan's limits are removed, and you get roughly a one-month window to restore access by upgrading again. Documents over the limits can still be downloaded by the publisher even when readers cannot open them, so pull everything down while the account is still on its current plan.
Write down what only exists inside Issuu. Links you added with Issuu's link editing and conversion tools, Lead Generation forms, Digital Sales listings and Free Access Codes are Issuu account features rather than parts of the file you designed. Plan on rebuilding or replacing them elsewhere, and treat your own original document as the thing you are actually moving. List which page carries what before you stop paying, because that list is what you will rebuild. Note your 30-day statistics too, since Basic and Starter analytics do not go back further than that anyway.
Upload the PDF to Flipbooks AI. Drop the file onto the create page. There is no page cap here, so a document that Issuu's free plan capped at ten pages goes up whole, and conversion takes seconds with nothing to install. You get a preview of the flipbook before anything is published.
Set privacy and effect, then publish. Pick a page turn effect and add a password if the document is private. A single shared password works on the free plan, and per reader passwords are an Ultra feature. The new flipbook is reachable by its link only. It is never added to a public directory and we never submit it to search engines, so the link is the only way in.
Repoint every link before you retire the Issuu page. Website embeds, email signatures, newsletters and printed QR codes all still point at issuu.com. Keep the old publication live until you have swapped them. If the Issuu version was public, expect a delay before it drops out of external search results. Issuu says search engines will remove any reference to your content after deletion, but that removal runs on each search engine's timetable rather than Issuu's. Next time, use a QR code you control so the destination can change without a reprint.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Flipbooks AI free, and is there a catch?
It is free with two limits worth knowing before you start. You can keep three flipbooks live at a time with 1 GB of storage, and free flipbooks carry a small Flipbooks AI mark in the corner. There is no trial clock, no credit card, no page cap on the document and no ads beside the reader. Deleting a flipbook frees a slot straight away. Paid plans start at $59 a year, which removes the corner mark and unlocks brand colours.
What does Issuu's free plan actually allow?
Since 29 May 2025, Issuu's free Basic plan allows a maximum of five published documents in total, not per month, with each document capped at 50 MB and ten pages. Documents that exceed those limits stay hosted on Issuu but become inaccessible to readers, although the publisher can still download them. Free Basic also has no embedding at all, and analytics are basic statistics covering 30-day content performance. The ten-page ceiling is the one that rules out most catalogues and magazines.
How much does Issuu cost?
Issuu does not publish prices in its help documentation. Its articles say prices may vary and point at the pricing page, and that page builds its numbers in the browser. The figures in circulation are third-party: Capterra's United States listing, checked in August 2026, shows Starter at $19.00 a month and Unlimited at $188.00 a month as flat rates, with Teams on a custom quote, and the billing period behind those is unconfirmed. Issuu does publish 50% off for verified non-profits and a free year of Starter for individual students.
Can I password protect an Issuu flipbook?
Not on the share link. Issuu states that currently it does not offer password protection for the Unlisted document URLs, and no plan tier was found that unlocks it. Its privacy option is Unlisted, which excludes content from the issuu.com search engine and community but leaves it open to anyone holding the URL. On Flipbooks AI a single shared password can be set on the free plan, and per reader passwords, where each person gets their own, are an Ultra feature.
Will my flipbook show up in search results or a public directory?
On Issuu that depends on how you publish. Content is public by default, and Issuu defines Unlisted precisely as being excluded from the issuu.com search engine and community, so public publications are included in both. Issuu also warns that a shared unlisted URL might be discovered and indexed by another search engine, effectively making it public. A Flipbooks AI flipbook is reachable by its link, is never listed in any public directory, and is never submitted to search engines by us.
Does Issuu show ads on my publication?
On the lower plans, yes. Issuu states that publishers on the Basic and Starter plans see in-publication advertisements when their content is viewed in full-screen mode, described as pop-ups or ads beside the flipbook and a mix of Issuu's own promotional ads and third-party ads. It also notes those publications will be displayed within a webpage that may include third-party ads. Removing in-publication ads requires upgrading past Starter. Flipbooks AI shows no ads beside the reader on any plan, free included.
Can I embed an Issuu flipbook on my own site for free?
No. Embedding is listed as a Starter feature and the free Basic feature list has no embedding entry, so Issuu tells free users they need to upgrade to keep using the embed feature. Advanced embed options, including hiding the Share button, adding a logo and removing the Issuu branding text, sit on Unlimited and Teams. Two caveats apply on any plan: drafts cannot be embedded until published, and on free WordPress only URL-based embedding works. On Flipbooks AI, embedding starts on Plus at $14 a month or $108 a year.
What happens to my Issuu publications if I downgrade?
Issuu's documentation is blunt about this. On Basic, only the five most recently published documents remain accessible to your audience. Anything over the new plan's page or size limits renders as the cover page only, in both the reader and any embeds, and publications exceeding those limits are removed, with roughly a one-month window to restore access by upgrading again. Download your source files before you downgrade rather than after, because the publisher can still download documents readers can no longer open.
Can I move my Issuu publications to Flipbooks AI?
Not by importing. Flipbooks are generated from a source document, so switching means uploading the same file to Flipbooks AI. Keep the original you designed and moving between these two tools is just another upload. What will not come with it is the Issuu URL, plus the things you configured inside your Issuu account rather than inside your document: links added with its editing tools, Lead Generation forms, Digital Sales listings and Free Access Codes. Those are account features, so budget for rebuilding or replacing them rather than transferring them.
Is Issuu a bad product?
No, and a comparison that said so would not be worth your time. Issuu holds 4.5 out of 5 across 153 Capterra reviews, with Ease of Use its highest sub-score at 4.6. It accepts far more file types than we do, it runs its own on-site search and community that gives public publications an audience, and its Unlimited tier builds in selling, access codes and lead capture. The honest framing is that the two tools solve different problems: one is a publishing platform, the other publishes a PDF you have already designed.
