Flipbooks AI vs Canva: Where Do the Pages Actually Turn?

Canva is not a flipbook maker and this page will not pretend it is. It is a design tool, and by its own documentation the page turn comes from somewhere else: Canva's help centre routes flipbooks to Issuu, and its Apps Marketplace lists three more flipbook apps built by other companies. Flipbooks AI starts where a Canva export ends, turning a finished PDF into a shareable flipbook on an unlisted link. This comparison covers what each free plan really allows, Canva's watermark policy stated precisely rather than exaggerated, who can see your document once it is published, how embedding differs, and why the answer for most people is both tools rather than one. Every Canva figure here was read from canva.com or from Canva's Apple App Store listing in August 2026.

The Short Answer

Choose Flipbooks AI if the pages are already designed and you want them online today as a real page turn flipbook, on an unlisted link, with a shared password allowed on the free plan and no second vendor to sign up to.

Choose Canva if the document still has to be made and you need a proper editor, templates, stock, AI tools, Brand Kits and Brand Controls, or one subscription that also covers presentations, video, websites and print. Those are real capabilities Flipbooks AI does not have, and the page turn can still happen here afterwards.

Flipbooks AI wins 8 of these 11 rows, ties 3 and loses none. They are rows we picked, so read them that way. Every figure was checked against Canva's own public pages in August 2026, and the sections below say plainly where Canva is the better buy.

Pricing Compared

Flipbooks AI sells three plans in USD, checked in August 2026. Starter is $59 a year and is annual only. Plus is $14 a month or $108 a year. Ultra is $29 a month or $228 a year. Every paid tier removes the small corner mark, or swaps your own logo in, and unlocks brand colours. Plus adds the embed code and an allowed domain list. Ultra adds background music and per reader passwords. There are no seats to count, no add-ons priced separately and nothing above Ultra to be upsold into later, so the annual figure you pick is the whole bill.

Canva is harder to quote, and the reason matters more than the number. Canva Free is US$0. Canva Business is US$20 per person per month with no seat minimum, which Canva publishes in its own newsroom, although a yearly Business subscription is billed every three months rather than once a year. Canva Enterprise carries no public figure and routes to Contact Sales. Canva Pro is the real gap: canva.com/pricing renders its prices in the browser after the page loads and localises them by country, so the page itself carries no price text and no single Pro number is true for everyone.

The Pro figures quoted around the web usually come from Canva's Apple App Store listing, which shows $14.99 a month and $119.99 a year, with $15.00 and $18.00 monthly and $143.99 yearly variants alongside them. Those are Apple in app purchase prices in US dollars and they carry Apple's markup. The proof is in the same listing: it shows Canva Business at $25.00 a month against the US$20 a month Canva publishes for the web. So treat App Store figures as a ceiling rather than the web price, and load canva.com/pricing in your own country before you budget. All figures checked in August 2026.

What Each Free Plan Really Gives You

Canva Free is one of the more generous free tiers in software, and pretending otherwise would be silly. You get the full drag and drop editor, the free template and element library, PDF, image and video export, and embedding, with no clock running out. Upload storage is capped at 5 GB, which is five times what a free Flipbooks AI account gets. Per file caps apply on every plan: images under 50 MB, video under 1 GB, audio under 250 MB, PPTX and Illustrator files under 300 MB, and PPT under 100 MB. Custom font upload is not on Free, and adding a second public view link to a design is marked as Pro only.

What no Canva plan gives, free or paid, is a page turn reader. Canva's own help centre publishes an article called Create interactive flipbooks using Issuu, and the requirement it states is plain: to use this app, you must be signed in with your Issuu account. Canva's Apps Marketplace lists three more flipbook apps built by other companies, whose own descriptions claim page turn effects as theirs. So Canva Free is generous at the design step and hands the reading step to somebody else, which means a second account before anybody turns a page.

The Flipbooks AI free plan is narrower and points the other way. Three flipbooks stay live at once with 1 GB of storage, the link works immediately, readers need no account, there is no page cap and there is no advertising beside the reader. A single shared password is allowed while you are still free, which is unusual, and deleting a flipbook frees a slot straight away. The limits are real and worth seeing before you sign up: free flipbooks use the magazine page turn effect only and carry a small corner mark, and the embed code starts on Plus at $14 a month or $108 a year in USD, checked in August 2026.

Branding and Watermarks

Comparison pages usually overreach here, so this is the precise version. Canva does not stamp a Canva logo on free users' work. The only thing watermarked on Canva Free is premium elements, which render with a criss cross pattern over the design until they are purchased or until you upgrade. Canva's wording is that premium elements will have watermarks on your design if you are a Canva Free user, and the same rule follows the design into an embed. A design built entirely from Canva's free library exports clean on the free plan, at no cost.

There are two documented ways to clear those marks. You can buy the individual premium element, which Canva licenses per design: the licence covers unlimited edits and downloads within that same design, so using the element in a different design means buying it again. Or you can upgrade to Canva Pro, whose stated pitch is free unlimited access to the extended media library. Which route is cheaper depends entirely on how many premium elements you use and how often you reuse them across designs, which is why this page puts no single number on it.

Flipbooks AI is blunter and, on the free plan, less clean. A free flipbook carries a small corner mark whatever is on the pages. Any paid plan removes it, starting with Starter at $59 a year in USD, and you can either hide the mark entirely or put your own logo in its place, with brand colours unlocked at the same step. That is the whole branding ladder here: one rung. This comparison is deliberately missing from the table above, because on the honest reading a free Canva export can be cleaner than a free flipbook of ours, and a table that hid that would not be worth reading. Prices checked in August 2026.

Privacy and Who Can Find Your Flipbook

Canva designs are private to the account until you publish, and then the switch is hard rather than gradual. Canva's embed page states that for your design to be embedded, it will be made public, and confirms the consequence: if you are on a single plan, Canva Free or Canva Pro, embeds are public by default and cannot be restricted. Restricted embeds, visible only to authorised viewers, are limited to Canva Enterprise and Education Districts. Separately, Canva documents deleting a public view link as the way to remove access and make designs private again, though deleting it destroys that URL permanently and a new link mints a new address.

Two things here are worth not claiming. Canva runs a Templates Marketplace and a Creators programme, but no Canva page we read states that ordinary user designs are listed in any public directory, so treat that as unknown rather than as a mark against them. And no Canva help page we read documents password protecting a design link or an embed, on any plan. The access controls Canva does document are share permissions, deleting the public view link, and Enterprise private embeds. Not documented is not the same as not offered, so that is where the point is left.

A Flipbooks AI flipbook is reachable by its link and nowhere else. It is not listed in any directory, there is no public profile page, and we never submit it to a search engine, including on the free plan. Sharing does not flip anything to public, because the link is unlisted from the start. A single shared password works while you are free, and per reader passwords, where each person gets their own, come with Ultra at $29 a month or $228 a year in USD, checked in August 2026. One limit on our side, stated about our product only: a Flipbooks AI password gates the reader interface rather than the underlying file, so it is not a substitute for an access controlled document store.

Embedding and Sharing

Canva's embed is free, well built and not paywalled at all, while on Flipbooks AI the embed code starts on a paid plan. Share, then See all, then Embed gives you an HTML code or a smart embed link that works on WordPress.com, Medium and any site with oEmbed support. Embedded designs update automatically when you edit the source design, which is genuinely useful, and up to 100 Canva designs can be embedded inside another Canva design or doc. Canva also publishes viewer analytics on public view links, including average time on the link and time spent on each page of the design.

The cost of that embed is privacy rather than money. Confirming an embed makes the design public, and on Canva Free and Canva Pro those embeds cannot be restricted afterwards, with restricted embeds reserved for Canva Enterprise and Education Districts. It is also worth being clear about what sits inside the frame: it is Canva's own viewer, not a page turn reader. Canva describes its public view link as landing users in the viewing experience best suited to the design, which is a scroll or present view. It is not a poor page turn, it simply is not a page turn.

On Flipbooks AI the embed code and the allowed domain list arrive together on Plus, at $14 a month or $108 a year in USD, checked in August 2026. The domain list is the part that matters in this comparison: you name the sites allowed to frame the flipbook, so the embed is not open to anyone who copies the code out of your page source. Plain link sharing is level between the two products, since a published Canva design and a Flipbooks AI flipbook both open in any browser from a URL with no reader account, with Canva's Enterprise private embeds as the one documented exception.

Ease of Use and What Each Tool Is For

Canva is better at designing pages than we will ever be, and it is not close. It is a full drag and drop editor with an enormous template and stock library, AI tools including Magic Write, Magic Media, Generative Fill, Expand and Magic Resize, a PDF editor, and import from PowerPoint, Illustrator and Affinity files. Above that sits a brand layer Flipbooks AI does not attempt: Brand Kits hold official logos, colours, fonts and custom assets, Brand Controls can restrict team members to approved colours and fonts, and admins can run several kits for different teams or clients. One subscription also covers presentations, docs, whiteboards, video, websites, print ordering and social publishing.

The gap is the reading experience, and Canva says so itself rather than us inferring it. Its help centre routes flipbooks outward with an article on making them through Issuu, which requires an Issuu account and is unavailable on mobile, so that route is desktop only. Its Apps Marketplace lists Heyzine Flipbooks, FlippingBook, Issuu and Simplebooklet Flip, whose own descriptions claim the page turn as theirs. Canva then disclaims responsibility for them: some apps in Canva are made by third party developers, and Canva Support cannot provide credits or refunds for those apps.

Flipbooks AI answers one much narrower question: the PDF exists, how do I get it online and readable. You upload the file, pick a page turn effect, add a password if the document is private, and share the link. There is no template gallery and no in tool page editor, because the design work already happened wherever the PDF was made. There is no custom domain, no team seats and no API either. Which is why the honest recommendation is not one tool or the other. Design the pages in Canva, export the PDF, turn the pages here, and each product does the part it was actually built for.

Who Should Choose Which

Choose Flipbooks AI if

  • Your pages are already designed and you only need them online as a flipbook a reader can turn
  • You want the page turn to be a first party feature rather than a third party app with its own account and its own support queue
  • You need a password or an unlisted link while you are still on a free plan
  • You want an embed you can limit to your own domains, instead of an embed that has to be public

Choose Canva if

  • The document does not exist yet and you need a real editor, templates, stock and AI tools such as Magic Write, Magic Media and Magic Resize
  • Colleagues must stay on brand, with Brand Kits, Brand Controls and team collaboration that Flipbooks AI does not offer
  • You want 5 GB of free upload storage and a free plan that exports clean when the design uses only free assets
  • One subscription needs to cover presentations, docs, whiteboards, video, websites, print ordering and social publishing

How to Switch from Canva to Flipbooks AI

There is no import step, because a flipbook is always built from a source document. If you still have the PDF you uploaded, the move takes about as long as one upload.

  1. Export the finished design from Canva as a PDF. PDF export is available on Canva Free, so this step costs nothing. Check the premium elements first: they carry criss cross watermarks on the design until they are purchased or until you upgrade, and a design built entirely from Canva's free library exports clean on the free plan. Download the PDF at the highest quality setting available to you, because that single file is what becomes the flipbook.
  2. Decide whether you still need Canva's flipbook apps. Canva's own help article routes flipbooks to Issuu, which requires being signed in with an Issuu account and is unavailable on mobile, so it is desktop only. Heyzine Flipbooks, FlippingBook and Simplebooklet Flip sit in the Apps Marketplace as separate vendors, and Canva states its support cannot provide credits or refunds for those apps. If the page turn was the only thing you wanted from that layer, you can drop it and stop maintaining a second account.
  3. Upload the PDF to Flipbooks AI. One file, one upload, no second sign up and no image manager step in between. There is no page cap, so a long catalogue or annual report goes up whole, and the free plan gives 1 GB of storage with three flipbooks live at once. Readers need no account to open what you publish. You see a preview of the finished flipbook before anything is shared.
  4. Set the password, effect and branding, then share the link. Add a shared password if the document is private, which works on the free plan here, and pick a page turn effect. Free flipbooks use the magazine effect and carry a small corner mark; any paid plan from $59 a year in USD removes it or puts your own logo there and unlocks brand colours, and Ultra at $29 a month or $228 a year adds per reader passwords and background music. The link is unlisted: never added to a directory and never submitted to search by us. Prices checked in August 2026.
  5. Tidy up what is public back in Canva. Anything you embedded was made public in order to be embedded, and on Canva Free and Canva Pro those embeds cannot be restricted afterwards. Separately, Canva documents deleting a public view link as the way to remove access and make a design private again, and that deletion destroys the URL permanently, so a new link mints a new address. Update your website embed, QR codes and email links to the new flipbook URL first, then work through the old Canva links in one pass rather than while people are reading.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Flipbooks AI free, and is there a catch?

It is free with limits worth knowing up front. You can keep three flipbooks live at a time with 1 GB of storage, free flipbooks use the magazine page turn effect only, and they carry a small Flipbooks AI mark in the corner. There is no trial clock, no card and no advertising beside the reader. A single shared password is allowed on the free plan, deleting a flipbook frees a slot straight away, and paid plans start at $59 a year in USD, checked in August 2026.

Can Canva make a flipbook with page turns?

Not on its own. Canva does not ship a page turn reader on Free, Pro, Business or Enterprise. What it does ship is first party documentation for making flipbooks through Issuu, plus an Apps Marketplace listing Heyzine Flipbooks, FlippingBook, Issuu and Simplebooklet Flip, all built by other companies. So the accurate answer is yes, with a condition: the page turn comes from a third party app, needs that vendor's own account, and Canva states its support cannot provide credits or refunds for those apps. Read from Canva's help centre and Apps Marketplace in August 2026.

How much does Canva cost?

Canva Free is US$0. Canva Business is US$20 per person per month with no seat minimum, published in Canva's own newsroom, though yearly Business subscriptions are billed every three months. Canva Enterprise has no public price and routes to Contact Sales. Canva Pro cannot be quoted from canva.com at all, because the pricing page renders prices in the browser and localises them by country. Canva's Apple App Store listing shows Pro at $14.99 a month and $119.99 a year, but those are Apple in app prices with Apple's markup: the same listing shows Business at $25.00 against the US$20 web figure. Checked in August 2026.

Does Canva watermark free designs?

Only premium elements. Canva does not put a blanket logo on free users' work. Premium elements render with criss cross watermarks until they are bought individually or until you upgrade, and the same applies inside an embed. A design built entirely from Canva's free library exports clean on Canva Free. That is more generous than our free plan, where a small corner mark appears on every free flipbook until you pay, starting at $59 a year in USD, checked in August 2026.

Do I need an Issuu account to turn a Canva design into a flipbook?

For the route Canva itself documents, yes. Canva's help article on creating interactive flipbooks using Issuu states that to use this app you must be signed in with your Issuu account, and that the app is currently unavailable on mobile, so the design has to be opened on a desktop computer. Heyzine, FlippingBook and Simplebooklet Flip are separate vendors listed in the Apps Marketplace. Their plans were not researched for this page, so nothing is claimed here about their prices, limits or branding.

Can I password protect a Canva design?

Not documented. None of the Canva help pages we read on public view links, embedding and sharing describes a password on a design link or an embed, on any plan. The controls Canva does document are share permissions, deleting the public view link, and private embeds on Canva Enterprise and Education Districts. Absent documentation is not a denial, so no claim is made either way, and the comparison table above leaves this point unscored. On Flipbooks AI a single shared password works on the free plan, and per reader passwords come with Ultra at $29 a month or $228 a year in USD, checked in August 2026.

Does embedding a Canva design make it public?

Yes. Canva's embed flow states that for your design to be embedded, it will be made public, and that on a single plan, Canva Free or Canva Pro, embeds are public by default and cannot be restricted. Restricted embeds require Canva Enterprise or Education Districts. On Flipbooks AI the embed code arrives with an allowed domain list on Plus, at $14 a month or $108 a year in USD, so you name the sites permitted to frame the flipbook rather than opening it to anyone with the code. Checked in August 2026.

Which free plan gives more storage?

Canva, by a distance. Canva Free caps uploads at 5 GB against 1 GB on a free Flipbooks AI account, and its paid tiers go much further, with 100 GB on Pro and 500 GB per team on Business. Per file caps apply on every Canva plan too: images under 50 MB, video under 1 GB, audio under 250 MB. What our free plan gives instead is three live flipbooks with a real page turn reader, no page cap, no ads beside the reader and a shared password.

Can I use Canva and Flipbooks AI together?

That is the combination we would actually recommend, and Canva's own documentation points the same way by routing flipbooks outward. Design the pages in Canva, where the templates, stock library and AI tools are far beyond anything we offer, export the PDF, then upload it here and share the flipbook link. It keeps one design tool and one reader, instead of a design tool plus a third party flipbook app with its own account. Free accounts on both sides are enough to test the whole path.

Should I cancel Canva and use Flipbooks AI instead?

Probably not, and a comparison that told you to would be selling rather than helping. Canva's editor, template and stock library, AI tools, Brand Kits, Brand Controls, team collaboration and its breadth across presentations, video, websites and print all do things we do not attempt. Flipbooks AI has no template gallery, no in tool page editor, no custom domain, no team seats and no API. The one thing Canva does not do natively on any plan is turn a page, and that is the part we do.
