Flipbooks AI vs PubHTML5: Which Flipbook Maker Should You Use?

Both tools turn a PDF into a flipbook you share with a link, and both have a free plan that never expires. The free plans differ far more than the paid ones, and one of those differences decides whether you can use the tool for a client document at all. This comparison covers what each free tier really gives you, where branding and ads appear, what removing them costs, who can find your flipbook, how embedding and self hosting work, and who should pick which. Every price here was read from each vendor's own pricing page and checked in August 2026. Two facts come from Capterra rather than the vendor, the review score and the absence of a free trial, and both are attributed to Capterra where they appear.

The Short Answer

Choose Flipbooks AI if your document is already designed and you want it online quickly, password protected while still on a free plan, and kept out of any public directory, without paying $149 a year simply to remove someone else's logo.

Choose PubHTML5 if you want the bigger free allowance, 20 GB of storage and books of up to 500 pages at no cost, if you want to build and animate the pages inside the tool, or if you need to host the flipbook yourself, use a custom domain, add more accounts or drive it from a command line API. Flipbooks AI has none of those.

Flipbooks AI wins 8 of these 11 rows, ties 3 and loses none. They are rows we picked, so read them that way. Every figure was checked against PubHTML5's own public pages in August 2026, and the sections below say plainly where PubHTML5 is the better buy.

Pricing Compared

PubHTML5 sells four tiers, and only its annual prices can be quoted with confidence. Checked in August 2026, its pricing page lists Free, then Pro at $149 a year, Platinum at $299 a year and Enterprise at $999 a year, all in US dollars, each shown against a struck through list price. The page also displays monthly rates, but every one of them is exactly the annual figure divided by twelve while being labelled billed monthly, and the vendor's own help article says the Platinum plan can only be billed annually. Until those pages agree, treat the annual numbers as the reliable ones.

Flipbooks AI sells three tiers, checked on the same date and also in US dollars. Starter is $59 a year and is sold annually only. Plus is $14 a month or $108 a year. Ultra is $29 a month or $228 a year. The steps buy capability rather than volume. Every paid tier removes the corner mark, or replaces it with your own logo, unlocks brand colours and opens up the page turn effects beyond magazine. Plus adds the embed code with an allowed domain list. Ultra adds background music and per reader passwords.

The number most people are really shopping for is the cheapest plan that produces a clean, unbranded flipbook. On PubHTML5 that is Pro at $149 a year. On Flipbooks AI it is Starter at $59 a year. In fairness, Pro is not only a de branding fee. The same $149 adds the Page Editor, the Animation Editor, password protection, access statistics, Google Analytics tracking and the ability to keep books off the Explore directory, so one payment clears most of the free plan's restrictions at once. Two things worth knowing before you commit: Capterra lists no free trial of the paid tiers, and the vendor FAQ says you can stop or change a plan at any time but get no refund for the current month.

What Each Free Plan Really Gives You

On raw capacity PubHTML5 gives away far more, and that deserves saying first. Its free tier includes 20 GB of storage, up to 500 pages per book, five uploads a day, five offline or local publishes a month and one account, with mobile ready output. The vendor publishes no total book count for free users, so the throttle is the daily upload limit and the storage ceiling rather than a number of publications. Flipbooks AI keeps three flipbooks live at a time on 1 GB. If you publish a high volume of documents and branding does not matter to you, that gap is real and it favours them.

What the two free plans do with a finished flipbook is where they part company. A free Flipbooks AI flipbook can carry a shared password, is reachable by its link only, is never listed in any directory, has no page cap on the uploaded document and shows no ads. On PubHTML5 the pricing table shows password protection, custom branding, access statistics, the Page Editor and the Animation Editor as absent from the free column, and the vendor states that free output carries a PubHTML5 logo and ads.

There is one more free plan restriction that catches people out. The vendor's help page says flipbooks created by free users will appear in the Explore section of the PubHTML5 website if they publish the flipbooks online, and that keeping them private means upgrading to Pro or above. No free setting opts you out. So the honest summary is a straight trade. PubHTML5 free is more generous about how much you can publish, and Flipbooks AI free is more generous about what happens to the thing you published. Our free plan has its own limit worth stating: only the magazine page turn effect, with the rest behind a paid tier.

Branding and Watermarks

Neither free plan hands you a clean flipbook, and a comparison that pretended otherwise about its own product would not be worth your time. Flipbooks AI puts a small corner mark on free flipbooks. PubHTML5 goes further. Its FAQ states that the free version will put a PubHTML5 logo and ads on the published eBook, its pricing table lists a Watermark Embed row as present on Free and absent on every paid tier, and a help article says that if you want to get rid of that logo you can go for the Pro version. The vendor gives no detail about what those ads look like or where they sit, so we will not invent any.

Removing the branding costs $149 a year on PubHTML5, the price of Pro, which is the first tier that drops the watermark. On Flipbooks AI every paid tier removes the corner mark, starting at $59 a year, and you can either hide branding entirely or replace it with your own logo. Brand colours for the reader controls unlock on that same $59 plan rather than higher up. Both sets of figures were checked in August 2026.

The gap is narrower than those two prices suggest, because the products bundle branding differently. PubHTML5 puts custom logo and branding in the same tier as the Page Editor, password protection and analytics, so a buyer who wants all of that gets a great deal for one annual fee, and Platinum adds a custom domain, which is stronger brand control than Flipbooks AI offers at any price. Flipbooks AI is cheaper for the narrow job of publishing your own document under your own mark, and it has nothing else to sell you afterwards.

Privacy and Who Can Find Your Flipbook

This is the difference that decides it for anything confidential. PubHTML5's help page states that flipbooks created by free users will appear in the Explore section of the PubHTML5 website if they publish the flipbooks online, and that if you want to keep them private you need to upgrade to Pro or above. There is no documented free setting that opts you out. Explore is a real directory, browsable without logging in, with Browse Hot and Browse Latest views and categories running from Business and Finance to Health and Fitness, and the vendor markets search engine indexing of publications as a feature.

For some documents that is a benefit rather than a cost, and filing it purely as a drawback would be dishonest. If you are publishing a catalogue, a lookbook or a magazine that wants readers, a discovery network is free distribution attached to a product you were paying nothing for. The homepage claims more than 79 million hosted publications, which is a marketing figure rather than an audited one, but the traffic argument behind it is genuine. For a client price list, an internal handbook or a pitch deck, the same setting makes the free plan unusable.

Flipbooks AI takes the opposite default. A flipbook is reachable by its link, is never listed in any directory, and is never submitted to search engines by us. A single shared password can be set while you are still on the free plan, and per reader passwords are an Ultra feature. On PubHTML5 password protection starts at Pro, and its Private mode works differently, by entering the email addresses of the people authorised to open the publication rather than by one shared password. How those readers are checked is not documented on the pages we read, so we will not describe it either way. One caveat on our side: a Flipbooks AI password gates the reader interface, not the underlying file.

Embedding and Sharing

Embedding is the one comparison we could not settle, and saying so is better than guessing. PubHTML5's pricing comparison table has no row for embedding at all, and its help article simply walks through the workflow, find your Pubs, click the Embed icon, then copy the code from the popup window and paste it into your web page, without naming a required tier. So we will not tell you embedding is paid only, and we will not promise it works on Free. If it is the deciding factor for you, ask them directly before you pay for anything.

If embedding does work on their free tier, what such an embed would carry is not in doubt. The vendor states that free output has a PubHTML5 logo and ads, and an embed keeps the book on their servers, so that branding would sit inside your own page rather than only on their domain. On Flipbooks AI the embed code and the allowed domain list start on Plus, $14 a month or $108 a year, checked in August 2026. The allowed domain list is the part worth paying for: you decide which sites are permitted to frame the flipbook.

On portability PubHTML5 is plainly ahead and it should be conceded clearly. Offline or local computer publishing is included even on Free at five per month and is unlimited on every paid tier, paid tiers add an FTP uploader, and Platinum adds a custom domain, so you can take the flipbook off their platform and run it on your own server. Flipbooks AI has no export of that kind and no custom domain at any price. Plain link sharing is comparable on both sides: each tool gives you a URL that opens in any browser with no reader account and no app.

Ease of Use and What Each Tool Is For

PubHTML5 is a publishing suite and it is sized like one. Above the free tier it adds a Page Editor and an Animation Editor for building and animating pages inside the tool, access statistics, Google Analytics tracking and an FTP uploader, then a custom domain and three accounts on Platinum, and ten accounts plus command line API access on Enterprise. Capterra rates it 4.6 out of 5 across 25 reviews. If your document is not finished yet, or a colleague needs their own login, that is a shopping list Flipbooks AI cannot match at any price.

The friction we found is in the documentation rather than the product. The FAQ still uses the retired PUB HTML5 branding and cites a site wide ceiling of 8,000 pages that does not line up with the Unlimited pages the pricing table promises paid tiers. The pricing table itself has no row for embedding and no row for privacy or Explore listing, which are two of the questions a buyer most needs answered before paying. Expect to read several help articles, and to find them disagreeing with each other, before you are sure what you are buying.

Flipbooks AI answers a narrower question: the PDF is finished, how do I get it online. You upload the file, choose a page turn effect, add a password if the document is private, and share the link. There is no template gallery, no page editor, no custom domain, no team seats and no API, because the design work already happened wherever you made the PDF. That narrowness is the entire product rather than a gap we plan to fill. If you need anything on that list, buy the other tool and do not let a price gap talk you out of it.

Who Should Choose Which

Choose Flipbooks AI if

  • Your PDF is already designed and you only need it online, readable and shareable today
  • You want a password or an unlisted link while you are still on a free plan
  • You want branding removed for $59 a year instead of $149 a year, checked in August 2026
  • The document is confidential and must never appear in a public discovery directory

Choose PubHTML5 if

  • You want the larger free allowance: 20 GB of storage and books of up to 500 pages at no cost
  • You want to build the pages inside the tool with the Page Editor and Animation Editor, and track them with access statistics and Google Analytics
  • You want to host the flipbook yourself, with offline publishing included even on Free and an FTP uploader on paid tiers
  • You need a custom domain, more than one account, or command line API access, none of which Flipbooks AI offers at any price

How to Switch from PubHTML5 to Flipbooks AI

There is no import step, because a flipbook is always built from a source document. If you still have the PDF you uploaded, the move takes about as long as one upload.

  1. Get the original PDF back. There is no import step on our side, because Flipbooks AI builds every flipbook from a source document you upload. Use the original PDF you uploaded to PubHTML5 rather than anything exported from the reader. If you no longer have it, rebuild the PDF from the design file it came from so the text stays sharp and any links inside it survive the move.
  2. List anything you built inside PubHTML5. Video, audio and animated elements are added with their Page Editor and Animation Editor, not in your PDF, so they do not travel with the file. Walk through each book and write down what is on which page before you stop paying, because that list is what you will need to rebuild or fold back into the PDF itself.
  3. Check what is already public. The vendor states that flipbooks created by free users will appear in the Explore section of the PubHTML5 site if they publish them online, and it markets search engine indexing of publications as a feature. Before deleting anything, list which of your books are live. If a document should never have been public, ask the search engine to remove the cached URL rather than assuming deletion is instant.
  4. Upload the PDF to Flipbooks AI and set privacy. Drop the file on the create page. Conversion takes seconds, with no install, and you see a preview before anything is published. Pick a page turn effect, and add a password if the document is private. The new flipbook is reachable by link only, is never listed in a directory and is never submitted to search engines by us.
  5. Repoint every link, then close the loop. Website embeds, email signatures, printed QR codes and any copy you published offline or pushed over FTP still point at the old book. Swap them first and keep the PubHTML5 version live until they are all updated. Next time use a QR code you control, so the destination can change later without a reprint.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Flipbooks AI free, and is there a catch?

It is free, with two limits worth knowing before you start. You can keep three flipbooks live at a time on 1 GB of storage, and free flipbooks carry a small Flipbooks AI mark in the corner. There is no trial clock, no card required and no advertising next to your content. Deleting a flipbook frees a slot straight away. Paid plans start at $59 a year, checked in August 2026, which removes the corner mark and unlocks brand colours.

Does PubHTML5 have a free plan, and what does it limit?

Yes, and on raw capacity it is more generous than ours. Their pricing page lists 20 GB of storage, up to 500 pages per book, five uploads a day, five offline or local publishes a month and one account, with mobile ready output. The vendor publishes no total book count, so the throttle is the daily uploads and the storage ceiling. Excluded from free are the Page Editor, the Animation Editor, custom branding, password protection and access statistics.

Do free PubHTML5 flipbooks carry a logo and ads?

According to the vendor, yes. Their FAQ states that the free version provides basic features but that there will be a PubHTML5 logo and ads on the published eBook, and their pricing table lists a Watermark Embed row as present on Free and absent on every paid tier. A help article adds that to remove the logo you go for the Pro version. The vendor gives no detail about the format or placement of those ads, so we cannot describe them.

Can I keep a PubHTML5 flipbook private on the free plan?

Not if you publish it online. Their help page states that flipbooks created by free users will appear in the Explore section of the PubHTML5 website if they publish them online, and that keeping them private means upgrading to Pro or above. No free setting opts you out. Password protection is likewise absent from the Free column of their pricing table and starts at Pro. On Flipbooks AI a flipbook is link only and unlisted from the start, and a shared password works on the free plan.

What does PubHTML5 cost, and can I pay monthly?

Checked in August 2026, their annual prices are Pro at $149, Platinum at $299 and Enterprise at $999, in US dollars, each shown against a struck through list price. Monthly is harder to answer honestly. Every monthly figure on their pricing page is exactly the annual price divided by twelve while being labelled billed monthly, and their own help article says the Platinum plan can only be billed annually. Because their pages disagree, only the annual figures are safe to quote.

Can I import my existing PubHTML5 books?

Not directly. Flipbooks AI has no importer, and every flipbook here is generated from a source document, so switching means uploading the same PDF again. Video, audio and animated elements are added with their Page Editor and Animation Editor, not in your PDF, so they do not travel with the file. Because both tools build from a source document you keep, holding on to your original PDFs is what makes moving between these two easy. The one thing that never travels is the public URL.

Can I embed a flipbook on my own website?

On Flipbooks AI the embed code and the allowed domain list start on the Plus plan, $14 a month or $108 a year. On PubHTML5 we cannot tell you which tiers include it: their pricing comparison table has no embedding row at all, and their embed help article gives the iframe workflow without naming a plan. If embedding does work on their free tier, the vendor states free output carries their logo and ads, so such an embed would place that branding inside your page. Ask them before buying if this decides it.

How many pages can one flipbook have?

On PubHTML5 the free plan is capped at 500 pages per book, and the pricing table lists paid tiers as Unlimited, although their FAQ separately states that files published to the platform must be less than 8,000 pages. Those two vendor pages do not agree. Flipbooks AI sets no page cap at all, so a long catalogue or annual report goes up whole. What limits you instead is storage, 1 GB on the free plan, and a very heavy PDF simply takes longer to convert.

Do readers need an account or an app?

For a normal public publication, no, on either platform. The PubHTML5 FAQ says readers can view your publication simply with an internet browser, and their Explore directory can be browsed without logging in. A Flipbooks AI flipbook opens from its link in any modern browser, on desktop or mobile, with no account. One thing we will not guess at is their Private mode, which works by entering authorised email addresses; how a reader is checked there is not documented.

Is PubHTML5 a bad product?

No, and a comparison that claimed so would not be worth reading. Capterra rates it 4.6 out of 5 across 25 reviews, its free storage allowance is far larger than ours, and Pro clears most of the free plan's limits for one annual fee. It also lets you export and self host, which we do not, and offers a custom domain, extra accounts and API access on higher tiers. The honest framing is that it builds publications from scratch, while Flipbooks AI publishes documents you have already designed.
